Socioecology and/or technoecology?

Kick-off Meeting for the CU4: what are the relations between humanity, nature and technology?

On 17th February, the PhD SDC Curriculum 4 (Theories, Institutions, and Cultures) kick-off event took place at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. Following brief lectures from professors, PhD candidates were asked to gather in teams and reflect on relationships between nature, humanity, and technology. The day ended with the presentations of the groups and final reflections.

Global challenges are posing complex research questions that need cross-disciplinary answers. Nevertheless, technological fixes still seem to assume that the human can separate itself from the earth system, obscuring the need for a renewed idea of inner relationships between nature, humanity, and technology. The groups of PhD candidates concluded with the need for a more systemic approach in addressing the climate crisis - i.e. bridging socioecology with technoecology in order to tackle the issue in a more holistic way.
