Three-day gathering explores cross-sectoral solutions to climate challenges through research, collaboration, and policy innovation
From June 4–6, 2025, the city of Mantova hosted the PhD-SDC Multidisciplinary Event titled “Moving Towards Net-Zero: Interdisciplinary Insights and Collaborative Solutions.” The event brought together PhD students, faculty, and climate experts for three days of intensive dialogue, learning, and teamwork—all focused on the urgent goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
Day 1 opened with a welcome session and a series of thought-provoking lectures. Experts shared insights on climate change's impact on land use, the economic opportunities of transitioning to net-zero, and the roles of sociology, smart cities, the blue economy, and food security technologies. Students were then introduced to the interdisciplinary Working Groups (WGs) that would form the core of the event.
Day 2 was dedicated entirely to collaborative WG sessions. Students tackled complex challenges across six thematic areas: Transport, Finance, Agriculture, Health, Social Justice, and Smart Cities. Guided by expert facilitators, participants exchanged knowledge, debated ideas, and developed actionable solutions. The day concluded with a community dinner, fostering deeper connections among attendees.
Day 3 featured WG presentations, where each group shared their findings and proposed policy recommendations with the broader audience. The event concluded with an interactive feedback session, reinforcing the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping effective climate action.
The Mantova event offered PhD students a unique opportunity to integrate technical, social, and policy perspectives into their research. By working across disciplines, they strengthened their ability to contribute meaningful, real-world solutions to today’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
