Luca Delle Monache from UC San Diego to speak at Scuola Normale Superiore on June 30, 2025

On June 30, 2025 at 3:30 PM, the Scuola Normale Superiore will host a seminar titled "Atmospheric Rivers and Extreme Precipitation" in the Sala Azzurra, Palazzo della Carovana, Piazza dei Cavalieri 7, Pisa.

The event, organized by Nicola Tasinato (Scuola Normale Superiore) and Roberto Buizza (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna), will feature Luca Delle Monache, a leading expert from the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego.

The seminar will delve into the physical processes behind extreme precipitation, focusing particularly on atmospheric rivers, which are responsible for delivering up to half of California’s annual water supply. Delle Monache will also discuss the impact of climate change on the frequency and intensity of these phenomena, and present cutting-edge advances in physics- and AI-based prediction techniques.
