Tell us about yourself (Where do you study in Italy and Why did you want to do a PhD? Why did you select the SDC?)
Hello everyone,
My name is Amanuel Tesfaye, a Ph.D. student in the Technology and Territory curriculum (CU3) of the 39th cycle of the Sustainable Development and Climate Change program at IUSS Pavia.
My academic journey began with a background in mechanical engineering, and I am passionate about furthering my knowledge of renewable and sustainable energy systems. I aspire to contribute to global solutions for sustainable development.
Italy’s strong focus on renewable energy research and IUSS Pavia’s excellence in fostering interdisciplinary research were pivotal in my decision to pursue my PhD here. The Sustainable Development and Climate Change (SDC) program's interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach has broadened my perspective on problem-solving, making it an ideal fit for my academic interests and career goals.
Where were/are you during your period abroad, and how long did/will you stay there?
Since September 27, 2024, I have been in Bilbao, Spain, hosted by Mondragon University at the Faculty of Engineering. I will be spending six months here in two separate rounds.
This destination aligns perfectly with my PhD research, and I am excited to work with Prof. Markel Penalba and his research team, whose expertise in marine renewable energy will greatly benefit my studies. The university’s cutting-edge facilities for marine renewable energy research, including access to advanced simulation tools, have been instrumental in advancing my work.
What were/are your first impressions of the university, your supervisor, and the research team? Did you feel well integrated into the team?
From the very beginning, I was impressed by the collaborative spirit among the researchers. My supervisor and his research team have been supportive and approachable, offering valuable guidance for my research. They welcomed me warmly, introduced me to ongoing projects, and have been incredibly helpful in helping me integrate into the team. For instance, during my couple of weeks, my professor organized a brainstorming session where I was able to present my research ideas and receive constructive feedback. Their guidance plays a crucial role in advancing my research.
Did/Do you face any challenges during your time abroad? If so, what were they? How did you solve them? What advice would you offer to colleagues preparing for their own experience abroad (particularly regarding administrative practices, funding, or opportunities specific to the destination country)?
During my time abroad, I encountered a significant challenge: finding an apartment for a short duration. Securing a place to stay for just three months proved difficult, particularly because the rent was high compared to my PhD scholarship amount.
To address this issue, I initially stayed in temporary accommodation while I actively searched for a more permanent residence. Platforms like Idealista and advice from local colleagues proved invaluable in securing affordable accommodation. I was incredibly grateful for the kindness of the local people, whose support helped me find a room in a short period.
I recommend that future colleagues who are preparing for a stay abroad begin planning these logistical aspects well in advance. It's essential to communicate with administrative offices for guidance and support, as well as to seek advice from colleagues who have had similar experiences. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the necessary documents and administrative processes early on to save significant time and effort later. Finally, research the cost of living in your destination city and budget carefully to avoid financial stress.
What are your plans upon returning (or after your return) to Italy? Do you feel your time abroad enriched your research project and personal growth? If so, how? Additionally, do you believe you made a meaningful contribution to the activities at the host university? If yes, in what ways?
Upon my return to Italy, I plan to integrate the insights and methodologies I have gained during my period abroad into my research. For instance, I plan to incorporate the advanced numerical modeling techniques I learned in Bilbao into my ongoing simulations.
My experience in Bilbao has greatly enhanced my technical skills and contributed to my personal growth by exposing me to diverse perspectives. I believe I am contributing to the host university by sharing my work and collaborating on research projects.
What aspects of the local culture stood out to you (something you loved or perhaps found challenging)? Was there a favorite place where you enjoyed spending time, and how did you make the most of your free time?
I loved the vibrant Basque culture and enjoyed its culinary traditions, particularly pintxos, along with the warm community atmosphere.
During my free time, exploring the Old Town (Casco Viejo) and walking along the Nervión River offered a perfect balance to my academic activities. I also took trips to coastal towns like Bermeo and Bakio, using the Barik transport card, which allows for travel throughout the Bizkaia territory using public transport.
The stunning architecture and the breathtaking visit to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe enriched my stay. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the Basque lifestyle.
